What to Do About Mold on Window Frames

Finding mold anywhere in your home can be alarming, but when mold is growing around your windows, it can make your otherwise clean home look less pristine. The sooner you can clean it off and find ways to keep it from coming back, the better. But where should you start? Your trusted residential window cleaning team is here to help. Follow these steps and you’ll be able to get rid of mold around your windows with ease.

Clean What You Can

If you catch mold early on, you’ll likely find it easy to wipe up. Use your preferred cleaner and a microfiber cloth to wipe away the mold on the surface of your window frames. You may need to let the cleaner sit for a few minutes to loosen the mold. If it still won’t come up, use a paint scraper to gently lift the mold off of your window frames. Once you’re done, wash your microfiber cloth in hot water and dry it on high to kill any mold spores on the fabric.

Use a Solution to Inhibit Future Growth

Unfortunately, cleaning the mold off the frames isn’t enough to get rid of it. Mold is notorious for continuing to grow even after you think you’ve removed it completely. After cleaning the mold, you’ll want to apply a solution to inhibit future mold growth. You can pick up a mold inhibitor from your local hardware store. Keep in mind that these solutions have chemicals that may not be safe for children or pets. If you want to use a chemical-free method, use distilled white vinegar.

Spray the affected area with white vinegar and let it sit for at least 60 minutes. You may want to reapply the vinegar several times to fully block the mold from coming back.

Schedule a Window Inspection

Mold doesn’t just grow without reason. Often, it grows around your windows because there’s some underlying damage letting excess moisture inside your home. The best thing you can do is schedule a professional window inspection and let your window repair technician assess the condition of your windows. They’ll identify any damage and can tell you what you need to fix to keep mold from coming back.

Repair the Damage

If your window repair technician finds damage either to the window frames or the glass, it’s essential that you take care of the damage quickly. Otherwise, you risk more severe mold growth, water damage, and even pest infestations.

Schedule a repair appointment and let your technician fix your windows as soon as possible. If your technician recommends replacing your windows rather than repairing them, consider doing so if you can afford it. New windows will be better able to block out drafts and moisture.
